Born in Nagasaki, Live & work in Fukuoka, Japan
Naho Katayama is a self-taught artist. She started cutting paper in 2011. She developed an original technique of creating dimension via multiple layers of paper. First couple of years, she made a pieces as a hobby. She's been cutting paper professionally since 2014.
She uses a sharp craft knife, wood glue and a sturdy textured paper. First, she draws design, then she breaks up a single design into multiple patterns in her head before beginning the pieces cutting process. Her designs are quite small and most of her pieces are hand sized. She gets inspirations from haute couture, classic lace, high-end jewelry and old architecture which were made with highly sophisticated techniques and professional skills.
As a color psychotherapist, she had offered counseling service to many clients. Through her work she had learned how important it is to free yourself from all the information and value judgements and have some quiet time alone with your feelings. When you are focused upon something that draws your attention, you have put your daily life out of your mind and have some quiet time. She believes that art speaks to our deeper consciousness and draw you in.
Her creative motivation arises that her pieces provide the opportunity to reflect for the viewers. She continues to develop her cutting skills and strive to create more beautiful, delicate and intricate pieces to draw in the viewers.
